Workshop Overview
Before Singapore became a “Garden City,” it was once a Forest Island — a living tapestry of towering trees and air-rooted plants that grew upon them. These plants, known as epiphytes, formed Singapore’s very first natural gardens — suspended in mid-air, nourished only by sunlight, rain, and wind.
In this hands-on workshop, participants are invited to recreate this ancient garden story by learning how to mount an epiphytic plant onto natural materials such as driftwood, cork bark, or fern bark. Guided by Crafted Identity’s instructors, participants will explore how these fascinating air rooted plants — from orchids, hoya, dischida to ferns — embody resilience, adaptability, and harmony with nature.
Through storytelling and craft, “The First Garden” connects participants to the roots of Singapore’s Garden City vision, tracing its inspiration from our native ecosystems to today’s City in Nature. Each participant brings home their own living epiphytic mount — a botanical artwork that celebrates Singapore’s ecological and cultural heritage.
