Platycerium is a genus commonly known as staghorn or elkhorn ferns due to their uniquely shaped fronds. This genus is epiphytic and is native to tropical and temperate areas of South America, Africa, Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Guinea.

There are 18 species of staghorn ferns and many cultivated varieties.

This fern is unusual in that each plant has two different types of leaves. The uppermost leaves or “shields” will catch fallen leaves, insects, and other debris for nutrients while shielding the roots from excess water.

The lower leaves produce spores from which most types of staghorn ferns propagate. Some varieties also make pups or offshoots, and over time can grow to encircle whatever surface they’re growing on.

Staghorn ferns need bright, indirect or diffused light to thrive, though they must be protected from the harsh rays of the direct sun. Water on the medium (where they are mounted or [potted) when it run dry and mist on the leaves surface on both sides as well.

This product is mounted on recycled iron wood, which is resistant to rot and termites.
