The tropical beauty of rattan

Rattans are native to tropical area like Africa, Asia and Australasia. However, Indonesia has one of the largest rattan reserves in the world. They are found mainly in Maluku, Kalimantan, Sumatra, Sulawesi, and Irian Jaya of Indonesia. Philippines is also one of the major producers of Rattan products.

Most rattans differ from other palms as they have slender stems, various mm to approximately 5 cm diameter and has long internodes between the leaves. And rattan is not trees but they are vine-like, scrambling through and over other vegetation. Rattan stems are generally used for producing various household products such as furniture and woven basketware products. Rattan is a good material priced for being lightweight, durable and quite flexible. They are also resistant to splintering. Rattan can accept paint and stain just like many other kind of wood. It can be made into different colours; its inner core can be separated and worked into wicker for weaving. Indonesia’s government also promotes the cultivation of rattan so as to offset the exploitation of naturally growing rattan. This is to meet the growing demand for rattan products in domestic and global markets.
