Dischidia major is a very unique and odd-looking plant. Also known as Rattle Skulls, this plant produces leaves that emerge flat before slowly molding into the box-like shape. In the wild, this plant exemplifies the symbiotic relationship between plant and ant. The rigid, modified, hollow leaves provide shelter for ants while in turn receive higher levels of gasses like carbon dioxide.
Dischidia is a genus of mostly succulent, epiphytic vines in the Apocynaceae family. They are closely related to Hoyas, however their flowers are generally quite small, although some of them are also fragrant like Hoyas. They are found distributed throughout tropical Asia and so are very suitable for growing in our climate. Dischidias tend to enjoy quite bright, indirect light to some direct light. As they are succulent, you can afford to water less frequently then other vining plants. Feel free to trim the vines to the desired length when overgrown.
