Calathea lancifolia (Rattlesnake Calathea)
Calathea lancifolia is a striking Calathea with an incredible dark green pattern on the upper side of the leaf and a deep burgundy beneath. Its leaves are long and rippled, giving it the nickname Rattlesnake Calathea. This plant is relatively tall for a Calathea and makes a perfect statement piece in the home.
Calathea is a genus in the Marantaceae family, also known as the Prayer Plant family, so named because plants in this family ‘open’ and ‘close’ their leaves over the course of day and night. They are sought-after for their beautiful foliage that is frequently described as ‘hand-painted’. Originating from the tropical Americas, Calatheas are typically found along the forest floors, hence they are well adapted to low light conditions. They also prefer high humidity. You can achieve this with regularly misting, running a humidifier nearby, or grouping your plants closer together.
